Welcome to CrossFit Center City! We are a growing CrossFit affiliate located in the Camac Center near 12th and Locust in Center City, Philadelphia. The trainers of CFCC offer the city of Philadelphia an arena for the development of urban athletes. Regardless of your experience with CrossFit we would love to have you come out and give your first free session a try.

WHAT WE DO:

Crossfit is elite fitness for everyone.

Originally designed by former gymnast, Coach Greg Glassman, CrossFit is a system of training created after years of observing the metabolic demands necessary to foster fitness in professional athletes to senior citizens.

The best way to find out what we do is to try a free session!

WHAT IS OUR CONNECTION TO 12th Street Gym?

We are currently situated in the Camac Center at 12th and Locust in Center City, Philadelphia. The Camac Center is directly adjacent to 12th Street Gym and can be reached through the main entrance of the gym if you are a member of the gym itself. In order to attend any classes at CFCC you must be a valid member of CFCC, but it is not necessary to be a member of 12th Street as well.

WHAT DO WE THINK FITNESS IS?

WORLD CLASS FITNESS IN 100 WORDS:
Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar. Keep intake to levels that will support exercise but not body fat. Practice and train major lifts: Deadlift, clean, squat, presses, C&J, and snatch. Similarly, master the basics of gymnastics: pull-ups, dips, rope climb, push-ups, sit-ups, presses to handstand, pirouettes, flips, splits, and holds. Bike, run, swim, row, etc, hard and fast. Five or six days per week mix these elements in as many combinations and patterns as creativity will allow. Routine is the enemy. Keep workouts short and intense. Regularly learn and play new sports.

WHAT KIND OF THINGS DO WE DO?

With the exception of rest days (classic CrossFit programming optimally calls for a 3 day on/1 day off schedule) much of our training follows the CrossFit mainpage programming one day behind schedule. We do this so that we (trainers) can have a chance to complete the same WODs (WOD=Workout of the Day) before we ask our members to complete them as well.

CrossFit is composed of constantly varied, functional movements (like squatting, lifting, pulling, pushing, running, getting up and down, etc.) executed at high levels of intensity. Some days you will lift as much as you can for a few reps and then rest as much as needed before trying again. Other days you will complete an assigned amount of tasks as quickly and perfectly as possible.

Every workout is composed of measurable goals and therefore yields measurable gains (your time to completion for a certain number of tasks one month should be significantly less in the next month).

HOW DO I KNOW CROSSFIT IS RIGHT FOR ME?

If you are someone who:

  • Is looking to get in shape but can’t face going to a gym;
  • Has lost interest in your gym routine;
  • Thinks you don’t have time to exercise;
  • Is looking to get faster or stronger in your sport, OR
  • Is no longer seeing results with your current training regime;
Then CROSSFIT is for you!

WHAT'S WITH ALL THE SAND?

The basic philosophy behind CrossFit training can be summed up in the following words from its founder: "We all fail at the margins of our own experience." Maybe you can back squat 400lbs. How's your mile time? Maybe you can run a marathon. Can you confidently carry a heavy load for the same distance?

That said, as we grow as an affiliate we are preparing our members for the massive breadth of all the skills CrossFit teaches by beginning with the most basic materials and movements necessary. Our training is very sandbag dominant and will be even as we continue to introduce conventional iron lifts into our programming. We strongly believe that this kind of training quickly acclimates the body to the level of intensity which CrossFit Workouts require.

Sandbags trump barbells when it comes to preparing our members for a lifetime of uncertain situations. How many times in life are you given the opportunity to lift a load perfectly poised on the end of a long rod or consolidated into something the shape of dumbbell? Besides increasing the safety of our new members (sand doesn't hurt too much when you drop it), sandbags strengthen both the grip and the mind of seasoned athletes.

In short, if you are at home under a barbell we guarantee you that you will be humbled by a sandbag of the same weight. The reverse however, doesn't seem to occur.
